Our aspirations for September 2010

Recognising and valuing a more complete education

Background

In February 2009 the University’s Learning and Teaching Strategy Group endorsed a proposal by SCEPTrE that the University should actively examine the idea of an Award that would recognize and value students’ learning gained outside the academic curriculum. SCEPTrE, in close collaboration with USSU and the Careers Service was given the task of undertaking a Feasibility Study.

The information on this page is intended to:

1) Provide information about the Feasibility Study and provide reports on progress

2) Encourage feedback on the ideas (please send your comments and suggestions to Charlie Rickett C.Rickett@surrey.ac.uk

Vision

The University of Surrey Student Experience Strategy (July 2008) sets out a vision for a ‘complete education’ inspired by the belief that a higher education experience should recognise that students are engaged in learning in all aspects of their lives while they are studying at Surrey. It is this ‘whole of life’ learning that enables students to develop their unique identity and spirit to be who they want to be and realise their full potential as a human being.

Ideas Paper

It is hard to imagine something like a Surrey Award without making some concrete proposals as to what it might be. The Ideas Paper does exactly that and it

will be used to promote discussion about the principles and concrete practices and procedures on which an Award might be based and encourage the

evaluation of possible ways of creating an award. Please let us have your views on the ideas proposed.

Proposed Structure

Developing a structure and underlying pedagogy that promotes integrative learning is a continuous process. Early ideas have been reflined through discussion in the Development Group. The final version that was piloted can be viewed here.

Student Voices

Hear what some of our students say about their own life-wide learning and how it helps them to make their educational experience more complete.

Feasibility Study

The Feasibility Study involves.

1) Creation of an operational framework which brings together and connects existing practices and where necessary develops new building blocks

2) Finding out what other Universities do to inform our thinking and practice

3) Evaluating the feasibility of any proposals - considering the potential costs and benefits

4) Gaining the views of staff, students and employers on the merits of such an Award

Will an Award add value to your experience while you are at Surrey?
