Life-wide enterprise

Page history last edited by Norman Jackson 14 years, 2 months ago

Enterprise can mean different things depending on the context. It can be used to describe an organization created for business ventures, or an organisation within an organisation that engages in activities that support and add value to the organisation. It can also mean a purposeful undertaking especially one that involves complication or challenge, requires effort or boldness and some risk.

An enterprise can apply to an undertaking by an individual, a group or an organisation. At the philosophical level life itself is an individual’s fundamental undertaking but that within our lives we choose or are made to embark on specific enterprises that make us who we are and give our lives meaning in the world. For example, engaging in education is an enterprise that enables people to develop the agency and capability to make the most of the opportunities that are available to them and to create opportunities for themselves and others along the way.

At a more pragmatic level being enterprising connotes willingness to approach and engage with an undertaking, a problem, a challenge or an opportunity in a particular way and the capability to do so in an imaginative, creative and resourceful way. While the outcome may not be successful the attempt itself may create new understanding and practice from which later success or new opportunities can be grown.

SCEPTrE's 'learning for a complex world' proposition is that we need to develop the habits of thinking and ways of knowing, the capabilities and the will and other dispositions to engage with life in all its manifestations, in an enterprising way. In collaboration with Nigel Biggs (UoS Entrepreneur in Residence), our 'industrous undertaking' is to explore the idea of life-wide enterprise and how we might encourage, support, value and recognise a learners’ commitment to developing themselves as enterprising people.
